Do you feel a clicking or popping every time you open your jaw? Or have you ever had your jaw get stuck open or closed? It’s very likely that you have an issue at your TMJ, otherwise known as your temporomandibular joint.
If you ignore these symptoms, they could progress and cause issues at other locations in your body. This article will help you understand what TMJ dysfunction is and what you can do about it.
What is TMJ Syndrome?
TMJ syndrome is a condition in which the joint that makes up your jaw is not functioning correctly.
Your TMJ could be hypermobile or too stiff. In each case, this will effect your ability to open and close your mouth and may make eating difficult.
What are the symptoms of TMJ Syndrome?
TMJ syndrome will typically present with a clicking or popping sound at your jaw joint which is located near your ear. This popping and clicking will occur every time you open or close your jaw.
The popping and clicking also often is accompanied by sharp pain that can radiate further down into your jaw or into your neck and head.
TMJ syndrome can occur on just one side of your jaw or both sides.
What causes TMJ Syndrome?
TMJ syndrome is caused by abnormal mechanics at the jaw joint. If one of the cartilage discs in the jaw joint slips, you will have TMJ syndrome because it will get caught when you open or close your jaw.
Arthritic changes at the joint itself can cause TMJ to occur as well.
Another common cause is dental work because this causes your muscles around your jaw to brace your mouth to protect it, which changes the mechanics at the TMJ joint.
Potential Diagnoses
TMJ syndrome is often a diagnosis given on its own. But the following conditions are often associated with a TMJ dysfunction:
Headaches or migraines
Upper neck pain Postural dysfunction
Habitual Grinding at teeth at night and during the day
Did you know?
Did you know that over 90% of people who get TMJ are women between the ages of 30 to 50?
We suspect that something about changes in female’s hormones as they age effects the ligamentous stability surrounding the TMJ joint and can cause TMJ syndrome.
But if you have TMJ syndrome, you can improve your symptoms with conservative treatment and through changing which types of foods you consume regularly.
