Have you ever been walking along and suddenly you took a wrong step resulting in your ankle twisting? This is the most common way by which people “roll their ankle”.

And I hate to break it to you, but the effects of a sprained ankle last long beyond the initial pain from the twisting.

Let’s explore what exactly an ankle sprain is and why it’s important to seek out treatment to prevent long term dysfunction.

What is a sprained ankle?

A sprained ankle occurs typically with some sort of inward twisting of your ankle when you fall or misstep. When this inward twisting happens, it sprains the ligaments surrounding the ankle.

Depending on the severity of the sprain, you may experience significant swelling and bruising throughout your ankle and foot.

What are the symptoms of a sprained ankle?

Initially the symptoms of an ankle sprain are a sharp pain in the ankle joint itself. The sharp pain usually subsides and becomes a dull ache in the ankle and foot that occurs when walking and moving your ankle.

As the swelling increases, you will most likely experience stiffness at the ankle joint itself.

After the swelling dissipates, you may feel a sense of instability at your ankle. People often describe this as the sense that their ankle is going to “give out”.

What causes you to sprain an ankle?

Ankle sprains are typically cause by that twisting inwards motion that we discussed earlier.

They can happen as a result of everyday mistakes such as missing a curb step, but they are more common with higher level recreational activities and sports.

Individuals who enjoy hiking or running on variable terrain are also most likely to sprain their ankle as this terrain often results in catching a toe or your ankle having to react quickly to prevent a sprain.

Potential Diagnoses

There are several different types of ankle sprains depending on the ligaments you damaged. Their names are as follows:

  • Inversion ankle sprain
  • Lateral ankle sprain
  • High ankle sprain

Your practitioner will also grade your ankle sprain on a scale of 1-3. On this scale, 1 is the least severe and 3 is the most severe ankle sprain.

Did you know?

Did you know up to 40% of people who sprain their ankle once are likely to sprain it again?

Unfortunately, if you sprain your ankle this places you at a high risk for another sprain. This happens because when you sprain your ankle you damage your joint’s ability to understand exactly where it is in space.

So when you’re moving your ankle may not be able to effectively give your brain feedback about where it’s located making you at risk for spraining it yet again.

However, you can minimise this risk by seeking out skilled care from practitioners and staying consistent with your treatment protocol.
