If you’re experiencing severe back or neck pain and have noticed symptoms going down your legs or arms, you can’t keep ignoring this pain and just hope it will go away.

These types of symptoms indicate you may have a slipped or herniated disc. And this diagnosis warrants a visit to your doctor.

This article will explain what a slipped or herniated disc is and why you need to seek out care to get back to living life on your terms.

What is a slipped or herniated disc?

A slipped or herniated disc is where the cartilaginous tissue between your vertebrae call the disc bulges out of place and starts hitting the nerves either in your spinal cord or that exit out in between the vertebrae. It can occur anywhere along your spine including your neck, midback, or low back.

The severity of your symptoms will depend on the amount of bulging at the disc.

And in the case of full on disc herniation, pieces of the disc may have separated from body of the disc and entered your spinal canal.

What are the symptoms of a slipped or herniated disc?

The symptoms will vary based on what level in your spine the herniated disc is located. But in general, you will have back pain that is often described as severe, burning, and sharp.

Depending on the level of the slipped disc, you may have symptoms either at the front or back of your legs or into your arms.

And if the bulge is bad enough, you may also lose muscular function to some of the muscles in your leg or arms for a time.

If you experience changes in bowel or bladder function along with your sharp back pain, this is a sign you need to seek out medical care immediately.

What causes a slipper or herniated disc?

If we are 100% honest, science it not totally sure why discs start to bulge or herniate aside from some wear and tear or severe trauma.

Disc injuries tend to happen in younger individuals in their twenties to forties because the disc is softer and squishier, which allows it bulge or herniate. As we age, the disc becomes harder and calcifies making it less likely to impinge on a nerve.

Potential Diagnoses

A slipped disc or disc herniation is a diagnosis that is often given in isolation and is named based on the vertebrae level at which the practitioner identifies as the issue.

However, a slipped or herniated disc could be associated with one of the following diagnoses:

  • Cauda Equina Syndrome (nerve impingement low in your spinal canal)
  • Sciatica
  • Lumbar or Sacral Radiculopathy

Did you know?

Did you know that the most common location to get a herniated disc is between L5 and S1?

This is the lower point in your low back and it’s where your low back meets up with your sacrum.

This is thought to be a common place for disc herniation in part because this is the point in your spine that bears most of your body weight making the disc easier to injure.
