Hijama

Hijama

What is hijama?

In the Islamic world, Cupping is known as Hijama and is a popular practice especially in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia and Europe. In the Western world it is commonly referred to as Wet Cupping. It is derived from the Arabic word “Hajm” which means “sucking”.

• What is Hijama?

The procedure of Hijama is the same as Wet Cupping, except that the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) enhanced this practice by prescribing specific times at which to perform Hijama Therapy, in order to derive the most benefit and by stipulating the preferred areas of the body to perform Hijama, to promote good health and wellbeing, and as a preventative measure against the onset of ill health.

• When is Hijama best done?

It is recommended that Hijama be practised on the ‘odd’ days of the Lunar Calendar. Further to this, the specifically prescribed days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The optimum Sunnah days to perform Hijama Therapy are the 17th, 19th and 21st days of the Lunar Calendar providing these days coincide with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday is of further benefit.

However it can also be performed on any other day if you have any type of illness as it is not contraindicated.

• Benefits of Hijama

Hijama is like an oil change for the human body, if you compare the body to a car, you remove the old dirty oil (blood), so the body can replenish the circulatory system with clean blood. Hijama helps to remove impurities and stimulate the bone marrow to produce new, healthier blood and increase blood circulation and much more.

Hadith and Quranic Narrations:

• Narrated by Abu Huraira: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment." [Sahih Al-Bukhari 7:582]
• "The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Indeed the best of remedies you have is Hijama" Hadith (bukhari)
• Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "Healing is in three things: in the incision of the cupper (Al-Hijama), in drinking honey, and in cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my
Ummah (nation) from cauterization (branding with fire)." [Sahih al-Bukhari (5681)

• Usamah ibn Shuraik narrated:

“… ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Should we seek medical treatment for our illnesses?’ He replied: ‘Yes, you should seek medical treatment, because Allah, the Exalted, has let no disease exist without providing for its cure, except for one ailment, namely, old age’.” (Tirmidhi)

• Allah (swt) says in the Quran [Al Qur'an 26:80]

"And when I am ill, it is He (Allah) who cures me." From the above, one should understand that Imaan and Tawakkul have to be the utmost important parts of a Muslim’s belief so that problems, illnesses or troubles of life, should be easier to cope with. Allah has created illnesses and its cure and since this material world has been classed as a world of means it is necessary to seek medication/treatment for one’s illness(s).

Who should perform Hijama / Cupping?

This is a question that is widely discussed, debated and argued. Is it something that can be done at home by family members and lay people alike? or practiced by health care professionals with knowledge of the body and certified to do so. This is a very important question and needs to be further broken down into a few questions we can ask ourselves.

What is at stake?

firstly, it must be highlighted that our health. whether we recognise it or not, is our greatest possession, second to only one thing, our spirituality (Imaan). Once this principle is understood, the gravity of placing this trust (Amaanah) in the hands of someone else can truly be fathomed.

As Hijama specifically is a method of treatment that can have an influence on both ones physical and spiritual health, the importance of deciding on who can be entrusted is a serious matter.

How do we decide?

When we seek advice and treatment in any area, we should always go to the person who has the most knowledge, understanding and competence in that field. From a rational point of view, when such a valuable asset as health is at stake there should be no risks or chances taken if they can be avoided.

This is why the best choice would be a trained and qualified health professional who also has a good understanding of how cupping works both in its physical and spiritual applications. Here at the Hijama Clinic, we use advanced and innovative techniques alongside effective ancient remedies to get to the root of your problem and provide you with fast relief.
