Do you feel a sharp pinch anytime you raise your arm overhead? Or maybe you can’t tuck in your shirt behind your back because you get a pinching pain at the front of your shoulder. In each of these cases, you may just have a condition called shoulder impingement.
To figure out if your symptoms are a result of shoulder impingement and to understand what to do about it, keep reading!
What is shoulder impingement?
Shoulder impingement is a diagnosis that indicates when you are moving your shoulder something is getting pinched in the subacromial space. The subacromial space is the area where you humerus and your clavicle and shoulder blade meet.
This space is very small and if your arm is not moving with the correct mechanics, it can become very easy for structures in your shoulder joint to get pinched and cause you pain.
What are the symptoms of shoulder impingement?
The symptoms of shoulder impingement are typically a sharp pinching pain that occurs when moving your arm overhead, behind your back, or out to the side.
The pain will only occur through specific ranges of the motion. Often it is the middle range of the movement that will be the most painful.
What causes shoulder impingement?
Shoulder impingement could be caused by several things.
If you have any form of inflammation in the joint space, this can cause impingement because there will be less room for the shoulder to move.
Inflammation in the shoulder joint could occur because of an injury to the rotator cuff or to the bursa, which is a fluid filled sac that helps the structures glide when moving at your shoulder.
Shoulder impingement can also be caused by poor posture. If you are rounded forward at your upper back, this causes your shoulder blade and shoulder to move abnormally and may result in impingement symptoms.
Potential Diagnoses
Shoulder impingement can occur in total isolation, but is often associated with one of the following diagnoses:
Subacromial bursitis
Rotator cuff tendinitis or strain Postural dysfunction
Did you know?
Did you know if you have shoulder impingement it responds best to conservative treatment options?
Because the root issue with shoulder impingement is abnormal mechanics of the shoulder joint itself, it responds best to treatments that focus on improving tissue and joint mobility along with motor control.
Individuals with shoulder impingement can often reduce their symptoms anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks if they seek out appropriate care from a skilled practitioner.
