Do you hear and feel a loud click in your knee when you bend it or move it a certain way? If so, you might be dealing with a meniscal tear.

While knees can pop and click for a variety of reasons, the most common cause of clicking in your knee is a meniscal tear.

Let’s dive in to better understand what a meniscal tear is to see if it’s time for you to get your knee checked out.

What is a meniscal tear?

A meniscal tear is a tear in a structure in your knee called the meniscus. The meniscus is the cartilage located between your femur and tibia that acts as padding between the two bones to help absorb force at your knee.

What are the symptoms of a meniscal tear?

The symptoms of a meniscal tear are often a catching, clicking, or buckling sensation that occurs with movement. Most commonly, the clicking will occur when you bend your knee.

The clicking can be painful or you may feel no pain at all.

If your meniscal tear was traumatic, you will most likely experience swelling and discomfort in the knee joint itself.

If you have had a meniscal tear that is chronic, you may experience a sense of instability at your knee and feel like your knee is going to give out from under you with certain motions.

What causes a meniscal tear?

Meniscal tears can be caused by trauma such as falling, cutting during a sport, or any type of blunt force to the knee itself.

Meniscal tears can also occur secondary to normal wear and tear in some individuals as they age.

Potential Diagnoses

A meniscal tear is typically named based on the location of the tear in the knee and the type of tear that occurred.

Here is a list of typical meniscal tear diagnoses: Medial meniscal tear

Lateral meniscal tear Radial meniscal tear

Bucket handle meniscal tear Flap meniscal tear

Complete or incomplete meniscal tear Horizontal meniscal tear

Did you know?

Did you know that only the outer third of your meniscus is the only part of the meniscus that has a blood supply?

This is why if you experience a tear in your meniscus in the outer third, it may be able to heal on its own or it can be easily surgically repaired.

Tears that are not located in the outer third are less likely to heal and may result in more complications down the road.

This is why it’s important to receive care if you have a continuous clicking in your knee to rule out a meniscal tear and prevent chronic instability at your knee.
